A masculine tapered trouser or wide leg palazzo pant that evokes just the right amount of 90s business-suit drama but is balanced enough to feel modern. Elegant high waist, gorgeous front pleats for drama, and sleek back darts for shape.
In a soft linen, these feel like the ultimate three-season luxury. They'll adopt wrinkles gracefully and look even better broken in. In a heavier canvas or wool, they are indestructible.
The Trouser has a relaxed fit with a subtle barrel shape, cropped to the ankle to modernize the rounded silhouette. The Palazzo has a flowy, wide leg with a slightly more cropped length than the Trouser to balance out the volume. Use these classic, building-block pant patterns as a jumping-off point for a variety of wardrobe staples that will serve you well for years.
Required Fabric, Tools, & Notions
We recommend medium-weight fabrics with no stretch. Linen, cotton, hemp, in plainweaves or canvas will work well. Lighter weight fabrics will add more drape, and heavier fabrics will result in a more structured garment. Ensure that whatever material you choose can hold up in the pocket area.
You'll need:
-Fabric of your choice — see detailed fabric requirements here.
- 2” (5 cm) wide elastic cut to length for your waist
- All purpose polyester thread
- Sewing machine (capable of a straight stitch)
- Needle
- Scissors

Deceptively simple, the Andy Trousers come together quickly. The instructions are clear enough for a confident beginner but the drafting and design details are satisfying enough to keep a more experienced sewist engaged. Such a fun and satisfying project.
The pattern is very well designed, although I found the pockets a bit confusing. (that may be a me problem and not a pattern problem. I did end up tapering more, but I find most pants are not tapered enough for my liking...I do sometimes wonder if this shoes up more in larger sizes (I'm an 18). I made the Toile, I made the modifications, and the pants fit better than any I've made before. Will make another pair for fall.
I find it easy to use.
I love the style and i had to do some alterations to get a good fit. I had too much fabric at the belly, not enough at the but and had to add 14cm to the lenght. The Andys from 2019 had a great fit so it suprised me i had to change quite much to get the fit i was looking for. I am 183cm tall anf wear a 2XL - 3XL
A sewing pattern praised for clear, detailed instructions suitable for beginners yet engaging for experienced sewists. Customers said the trousers fit well with flattering darts and pleats, though some needed alterations. Pockets proved challenging for several. "Deceptively simple" design creates elegant, comfortable pants.

I adore my ESmade Andys and always wanted an ankle length palazzo. Finally my dreams came true and I'm living in my ankle length Andy Palazzo pants! The pattern is marvelously easy to track with! Thanks!

Great drafting and instructions
I made the Palazzo version in linen for a trip to Morocco. I am a small in the hips and medium in waist. Small would have been fine but I made a medium for room in tummy - fit is good and has nice drape. I am petite but only hemmed the unaltered pattern an extra 1/2 inches. Interesting pocket construction. I love the darts- makes for a flattering fit. Lots of volume, almost looks like a skirt. I recommend !
The Andy pants are my new go to pants! I love Elizabeth Suzann sewing patterns, I’ve made a few things now and the instructions are always clear and easy to follow. The designs are simple but stylish and elegant. So comfortable and practical you can wear them all day😄
While I have not made the pattern yet, I have friends who have purchased from you and love your patterns.
I love your website and weekly writings.
I love the concept of your business!
I love these trousers! They are not complicated to make but the pleats and darts create an elegant shape. I found the pockets a little bit difficult the first time but the instructions were helpful. I am looking forward to trying the palazzo version!
This is a very good pants pattern, and it fits well. I did mess up by not reading the directions on how to put together the pockets. The trial pair was made from fabric from the thrift store. Next time I will read and follow those directions, and I bet the next pair of pants will be even better.
This pattern is great! Very good instructions and I love the finished product.
I have been a casual garment sewist since I was a child, and would make a dress with my Nana every summer. Coming back to garment sewing as a retiree (using the same sewing machine Nana gave me as teen) I've tried a lot of new pattern makers, and Liz's instructions (may I call you Liz? I feel like you were there with me explaining!) are the best I have encountered. I just made another pattern with the same kind of on-seam pockets, but the pockets on the Andy pants came out perfectly because the instructions were so detailed. I also liked the extra detailing of the darts on the Andy pant....not just a pair of legs with elastic. The details really do make a difference. I have a pair of pants I love, out of the perfect color/weight of linen, and I can't wait for summer to really begin! Thanks Liz!
I absolutely love this design pattern—it's very, very useful! Thanks to it, I was able to make unlimited pairs of pants all by myself, even though I had no prior experience in sewing. I used only a basic home sewing machine, yet the instructions and pattern were so clear and easy to follow that I could confidently complete the project.
This pattern gave me the freedom to customize the pants exactly the way I wanted, and each time I make a new pair, I feel more proud and accomplished. I highly recommend it to beginners and anyone who wants to explore sewing without complicated equipment or background knowledge.
Truly a game-changer for DIY clothing!
Nice details, easy to follow directions, easy to alter. I’ll probably make a few more just like them!
I have purchased both the pattern and at least 2 pair of the factory made Andy pant. Both are flattering and fit very well. Pattern directions are very good. Have made in a worsted wool, plan several more in both silk and linen. I look forward to more patterns from Elizabeth Suzanne and I also plan to enroll in her online sewing series.
I love how the Andy trousers fit. I shortened the rise 1/2" on the second pair I made and also sized down one size (I was right on the cusp of small and medium) and they are just great. I love the back darts which reduces volume around the waist.
As always, the quality of this pattern and design is unmatched! Beautiful and clear instructions, elevated techniques that are made less intimidating, and on top of it all, the Elizabeth Suzann team was super helpful when I got too excited and accidentally purchased the same pattern twice. Can't wait to sew multiple pairs of these extraordinary pants.
I’ve never seen pants before and this was such a fun pattern! Used a poplin and am very pleased with the results.
