The Florence Pant is the easiest breeziest wide leg pant in the land! Use this classic, building-block pant as a jumping-off point for a variety of pant styles that will serve you well for years. A dead simple wide leg silhouette with a high rise. The Florence has a slim waist that isn’t bulky around the midsection but also has ease and room to move comfortably, making these pants you’ll want to wear time and time again.

In a soft linen, these feel seasonless and relaxed. In a heavier canvas or wool, they are indestructible. Pair with a cashmere sweater and sneakers and wear for an entire weekend trip to the mountains, or wear them in the summer with a silk tank. Or, do what I do, and wear them all the time as very stylish pajamas that allow you to go from your couch to the real world without changing a thing.

Required Fabric, Tools, & Notions

We recommend medium-weight fabrics with no stretch. Linen, cotton, hemp, in plainweaves or canvas will work well. Lighter weight fabrics will add more drape, and heavier fabrics will result in a more structured garment.

You'll need:

-Fabric of your choice - see detailed fabric requirements here.

-2” (5 cm) wide elastic cut to length for your waist

-All purpose polyester thread

-Sewing machine (capable of a straight stitch)

-Needle

Lovely high waisted pants

I loved making this pattern. I’ve been wanting some wide leg pants but not TOO wide. I love the high waist and the construction was easy especially the elastic. Not sure if it would be easy for a beginner? I’ve already made a second pair for my daughter in linen viscose and they look so good. I made mine in a thrifted batik sarong - so lovely old soft fabric. Perfect for the upcoming summer.

The hype is real

I had my doubts about paying so much for such a simple pattern (that didn't even include pockets) but they really are that great. The drafting is SO flattering, especially in the rear, but they're also as comfortable as pajama bottoms. I did end up adding inseam pockets on my own but they're a very fast sew.

I'm 5'7" with a long torso and usually add an inch to most patterns, but the rise on these in a large regular was REALLY high--past my navel. I made another pair and used the cut line for medium on the waist and that's more to my preference.

Great pattern, though. I get the hype now!

Wear these all the time!

So easy to sew and so elegant and comfortable to wear! I really appreciate the tall option. I am 178cm tall. The right rise and length make all the difference, I think I’ll have to make all my own pants from now on, I am spoilt! Also loved the Clyde but found the calves too tight for comfortable sitting, so happily wearing these while eagerly awaiting the calf pattern revision on the Clyde’s. PS if you’re buying elastic from spotlight in Australia the 4cm width is much cheaper than the 5cm.

Easy pattern with great results

The Florence pant was my first time sewing a garment since taking a sewing class 20 years ago. It’s a very approachable pattern and yields an extremely comfortable pant. I followed the stitchcollective YouTube video for instructions for how to construct the pants with pockets

Fave summer pants

I love these pants! I made them in a gauzy crinkle cotton poplin and they sewed up in an hour. They use my fave waistband method and 2inch elastic, which is perfect. The only change I will make in my next pairs will be to add pockets! Thanks so much for providing these patterns. They’re really great!!

Easy to make -- even adding pockets -- and so comfy!

I enjoyed using this pattern very much, and I am also enjoying the result-- which is essentially a "practice" pair made from a very old, very soft flannel sheet with big polka dots :-). The instructions were great for this very basic project, and I added pockets with the help of an excellent Stitch Collective video on Youtube (easily found with a basic browser search). The shape is just right for my body type, and now I know which size and length I want to use for the many pairs I hope to make and lounge around in soon!

Four pairs and more planned!

The Florence Pants are my favorite pants pattern, hands down. I have been sewing for 20+ years, and the drafting, fit and instructions for all the ES patterns never fail me. I have made four pairs of Florence pants, in different fabrics and weights, and they are the pants I reach for the most. My most recent pair is a pinwale cotton corduroy, great for the upcoming spring weather. I've even made a pair from an upcycled tablecloth, complete with a cutwork hem. There is a tutorial on YT for adding pockets I highly recommend, a few extra steps make these the perfect pants! I especially recommend them for bodies that have a generous bum and a 10"+ waist to hip ratio, they are easy to fit with the elastic waist. Thanks, ES!

Very simple vs elegant design

This was the first sewing pattern I ever tried. Of course, I made some mistakes while cutting, but its simplicity never frustrated me — I was so passionate about the creation process. I ended up making three or four pairs of pants in different colors and materials in a short time. I love them, still wear them, and definitely plan to make more.

I do hope Liz will release a shorts pattern too! For now, I’ve used this one to make a pair of shorts, and it works surprisingly well.
